Biography: Councilwoman Melanie Rutherford is a lifelong resident of Pontiac. She attended Pontiac Schools and graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1998. She attended Dillard University and Kentucky State University, and was a proud member of the AmeriCorps National Service. She has always had a desire to serve the public. In her professional career, she has served in various roles: she has been a resource advocate for United Way for Southeastern Michigan; a Training Ambassador with The NEXT Education from (2018-2019); and a field organizer in affiliation with the Michigan Democratic Party. Councilwoman Rutheford found an interest in composing music and is a professional Singer and Songwriter. She is the proud Owner of Mellosmooth Publishing and Mellosmooth Records. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and attending mental health seminars. She also loves volunteering to mentor students helping them get into college and is extremely passionate about helping her community. She is affiliated with several organizations and has served in leadership capacities:
Councilwoman Rutherford is also faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church of Pontiac. As well accomplished as Councilwoman Rutherford is, her most precious role is being the proud mother to her beautiful daughter Moriah. Moriah is currently attending law school and achieving her dreams of being a successful attorney. Councilperson Rutherford was elected to represent City Council District One in November 2021 to a four-year term expiring on January 1, 2025.
